And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud. 26 And the Jinn race, We had created before, from the fire of a scorching wind. 27 And when your Lord said to the angels: Surely I am going to create a mortal of the essence of black mud fashioned in shape. 28 When I have shaped him, and breathed My spirit in him, fall you down, bowing before him!' 29 Thereupon the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together, 30 Not so Iblis: he refused to be among those who prostrated themselves. 31 He said: O Iblis! what excuse have you that you are not with those who make obeisance? 32 [Iblis] replied: "It is not for me to prostrate myself before mortal man whom Thou hast created out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted!" 33 Allah said: then get thee forth therefrom; verily thou art one damned. 34 and will be subjected to condemnation until the Day of Judgment." 35 He said, “My Lord! Grant me respite till the day when they will all be raised.” 36 Allah said: "Then, verily, you are of those reprieved, 37 Until the Day of the time well-known." 38 Iblis said, "Lord, because you have caused me to go astray, I shall make earthly things attractive to (people) and mislead all of them 39 But not such of them as are Thy bondmen single-hearted. 40 Said He: "This is, with Me, a straight way: 41 “Indeed you do not have any power over My bondmen, except those wanderers who follow you.” (The devil is unsuccessful in tempting Allah’s chosen bondmen to commit sin.) 42 And verily Hell is the place promised unto them all. 43 It has seven gates; for each gate is a portion assigned from them. 44
