Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Kaf- Ha-Ya-'Ain-Sad. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 When he called to his Lord inwardly, 3 He said: O my Lord! verily the bones of me have waxen feeble, and the head is glistening with hoariness, and have not yet been in my prayer to thee, my Lord, unblest. 4 And indeed, I fear the successors after me, and my wife has been barren, so give me from Yourself an heir 5 who will be my heir and the heir of the family of Jacob. Lord, make him a person who will please you". 6 (Allah said) "O Zakariya (Zachariah)! Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, His name will be Yahya (John). We have given that name to none before (him)." 7 [Zachariah] exclaimed: "O my Sustainer! How can I have a son when my wife has always been barren and I have become utterly infirm through old age?" 8 [An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' " 9 He said: my Lord appoint for me a sign. Allah said: thy sign is that thou shalt not speak unto mankind for three nights, while sound. 10 So he came from the chamber to his people, and suggested to them (by signs) to sing the praises of the Lord morning and evening. 11 (It was said to his son): "O Yahya (John)! Hold fast the Scripture [the Taurat (Torah)]." And We gave him wisdom while yet a child. 12 And piety (for all creatures) as from Us, and purity: He was devout, 13 And was good to his parents and not forceful, nor disobedient. 14 And peace be upon him the day he was born and the day he dies and the day he is raised alive. 15
