For years We afflicted Pharaoh's people with shortages in food so that perhaps they would take heed. 130 Yet when good came their way they said: "It is our due;" but when misfortune befell them they put the omen down to Moses and those who were with him. But surely the omen was with God, yet most of them did not understand. 131 And they said, "No matter what sign you bring us with which to bewitch us, we will not be believers in you." 132 So We sent upon them floods, locusts, lice, frogs, and blood. (All these were) clear signs, yet they were proud against them, for they were wicked people. 133 And when the punishment descended upon them, they said, "O Moses, invoke for us your Lord by what He has promised you. If you [can] remove the punishment from us, we will surely believe you, and we will send with you the Children of Israel." 134 But when We removed the punishment from them until a term which they were to reach, then at once they broke their word. 135 Therefore We took retribution from them; therefore We drowned them in the sea: because they denied Our revelations and were heedless of them. 136 And We made a people, considered weak (and of no account), inheritors of lands in both east and west, - lands whereon We sent down Our blessings. The fair promise of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel, because they had patience and constancy, and We levelled to the ground the great works and fine buildings which Pharaoh and his people erected (with such pride). 137 And We transported the Descendants of Israel across the sea – so they came across a people who used to squat in seclusion in front of their idols; they said, “O Moosa! Make a God for us, the way they have so many Gods!” He said, “You are indeed an ignorant people.” 138 Surely this they are engaged upon shall be shattered, and void is what they have been doing.' 139 He said, "Is it other than Allah I should desire for you as a god while He has preferred you over the worlds?" 140 And (remember) when We did deliver you from Pharaoh's folk who were afflicting you with dreadful torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. That was a tremendous trial from your Lord. 141
