I say the truth, and call the moon to witness, 32 And by the Night as it retreateth, 33 And the daybreak when it shines; 34 That (Hell) is surely one of the greater (signs), 35 A warning for people -- 36 alike to every one of you, who want to go forward or hang back. 37 Every soul is held in pledge against its own deeds, 38 Except those on the right side. 39 Sitting in the gardens, asking 40 Concerning the guilty: 41 What led you into the Scorching Fire? 42 They will say: "We were not of those who prayed; 43 and we did not feed the needy. 44 “And used to dwell on evil matters with those who think evilly.” 45 and belied the Day of Recompense 46 until certainty came upon us [in death]." 47 So no intercession will avail them. 48 If such will be the Day of Judgment, what is the matter with them? Why do they run away from guidance, 49 As though they were asses startled. 50 Fleeing away from a lion. 51 Nay, every man of them desires to be -- given -- scrolls unrolled. 52 No! They do not fear the Hereafter -- 53 Nay; this is an Exhortation. 54 So, whoever wills may benefit from it. 55 But they [who do not believe in the life to come] will not take it to heart unless God so wills: [for] He is the Fount of all God-consciousness, and the Fount of all forgiveness. 56
