The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 By the Moon as she follows him; 2 By the day when it glorifieth it. 3 By the Night as it conceals it; 4 By the Firmament and its (wonderful) structure; 5 and by the earth and how He spread it, 6 and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it, 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 To a happy state shall indeed attain he who causes this [self] to grow in purity, 9 and truly lost is he who buries it [in darkness]. 10 Thamood cried lies in their insolence 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 Then Allah's Messenger warned them: “Hands off the she-camel and her drink!” 13 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). 14 And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof. 15
