And lo! Jonah verily was of those sent (to warn) 139 when he fled like a runaway slave onto a laden ship. 140 And then they cast lots and he was the one who lost, 141 [and they cast him into the sea,] whereupon the great fish swallowed him, for he had been blameworthy. 142 And had he not been of those who hallow Him, 143 He would have stayed in its belly till the day the dead are raised. 144 ۞ But We threw him on a wide bare tract of land while he was ill; 145 And We caused to grow, over him, a spreading plant of the gourd kind. 146 We sent him as a messenger to a hundred thousand people or more, 147 And they believed, whrefore We let them enjoy life for a season. 148 Now ask them whether your Lord has daughters, whereas they have sons. 149 Did We create the angels as females the while they witnessed?” 150 Now surely it is of their own lie that they say: 151 “Allah has begotten.” They are liars! 152 Has He chosen daughters above sons? 153 What is the matter with you, how is it that you judge? 154 Will ye not then be admonished? 155 Or have you clear evidence? 156 Bring your Book, if what you say is true! 157 And they have invented a kinship between Him and the jinns, but the jinns know well that they have indeed to appear (before Him) (i.e. they will be brought for accounts). 158 God is too glorious for what they ascribe to Him 159 except for God's sincere servants. 160 Lo! verily, ye and that which ye worship, 161 can lure away from God any 162 except him who shall roast in Hell. 163 [The angels say], "There is not among us any except that he has a known position. 164 And verily we! we are ranged in ranks. 165 and we are of those who glorify Allah.” 166 And indeed they used to say: 167 "If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples, 168 "We would have indeed been the chosen slaves of Allah (true believers of Islamic Monotheism)!" 169 But when it came to them, they rejected it. They shall soon come to know (the end of such an attitude). 170 Our word had already been given before to Our votaries, the apostles, -- 171 That they verily would be helped, 172 and Our armies shall be the victors. 173 So, (O Prophet), leave them alone for a while, 174 And see [what will befall] them, for they are going to see. 175 Do they want to hasten Our punishment? 176 But then, once it alights upon them, hapless will be the awakening of those who were warned [to no avail]! 177 And turn away from them for some time. 178 and watch. They, too, will watch. 179 Glory be to thy Lord, the Lord of Glory, above that they describe! 180 and peace be upon the Messengers, 181 And all the praise and thanks be to Allah, Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 182
