Samood gave the lie to the apostles 141 When their brother Salih (Saleh) said to them: "Will you not fear Allah and obey Him? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 And corn-fields and palm-trees whereof the spathes are fine? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 "And follow not the bidding of those who are extravagant,- 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 Thou art but a human being like unto us. So bring thou a sign if thou art of the truth-tellers. 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her and so became regretful. 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
