Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
HA MIM. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 Surely We revealed it on a blessed night surely We are ever warning-- 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 The command that We have been sending 5 A mercy from your Lord, surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you (but) have a faith with certainty. 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 Watch for the Day when the heaven will bring clear smoke, 10 Covering the people; this is a painful torment. 11 O our Sustainer, relieve us of suffering, for, verily, we [now] believe [in Thee]!" 12 How can there be for them an admonition (at the time when the torment has reached them), when a Messenger explaining things clearly has already come to them. 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And the delights which they had been enjoying! 27 Thus (was their end)! And We made other people inherit (those things)! 28 Neither did the heavens weep for them, nor the earth, nor were they granted respite. 29
