He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 Because a blind man came to him. 2 But what could tell you that per chance he might become pure (from sins)? 3 or take heed and derive benefit from [Our] warning? 4 As for him who thinketh himself independent, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 and fearfully, 9 Of him you are neglectful and divert your attention to another, 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 For any one who desires to bear it in mind, 12 On honoured leaves 13 exalted, purified, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Perish Man! How unthankful he is! 17 Of what thing did He create him? 18 Out of a sperm-drop did He create him and then determined a measure for him, 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 He will then send him to death and have him laid in the grave. 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 But no. He has not fulfilled what was enjoined on him. 23 Then let man look to his food, 24 We send down abundant water, 25 and then We cleaved the earth asunder. 26 and therein made the grains to grow 27 And grapes and herbage, 28 Olives and dates, 29 and dense orchards, 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 On the Day a man will flee from his brother 34 And his mother and his father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 and be cheerful and joyous. 39 some faces on that day shall be dusty 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
