And Jonah too was one of the Messengers. 139 He ran away to the laden ship, 140 He (agreed to) cast lots, and he was condemned: 141 And the fish swallowed him while he was blameworthy; 142 Had he not glorified God, 143 he would certainly have remained inside the fish until the Day of Resurrection. 144 ۞ But We threw him on a wide bare tract of land while he was ill; 145 and We caused to grow over him a tree of gourds. 146 And We sent him to a hundred thousand, rather they exceeded. 147 And they believed, therefor We gave them comfort for a while. 148 So inquire of them, [O Muhammad], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons? 149 Have We created the angels as females before their very eyes? 150 It is only because of their false invention that they say, 151 "Allah has begotten off spring or children (i.e. angels are the daughters of Allah)?" And, verily, they are liars! 152 Does He prefer sons to daughters? 153 What is the matter with you? How judge ye? 154 What, and will you not remember? 155 Or do you have a clear authority? 156 Then bring your book, if ye say sooth. 157 They link Him with jinns by lineage, yet the jinns know they will be brought before Him. 158 Glory be to God above that they describe, 159 Except the chosen bondmen of Allah. 160 Lo! verily, ye and that which ye worship, 161 You cannot tempt [anyone] away from Him 162 except those who are doomed to enter hell. 163 "There is not one of us who does not have his appointed place," (declare the angels.) 164 And most surely we are they who draw themselves out in ranks, 165 Lo! we, even we are they who hymn His praise 166 They used to say: 167 "If we had a message from [those of] the former peoples, 168 we would surely have been Allah's chosen servants.” 169 But (now) they disbelieve in it, so they will come to know. 170 And indeed Our Word has already gone forth for Our bondmen who were sent. 171 That they verily would be made triumphant. 172 And verily Our host! they are to be overcome. 173 So turn thou away from them for a little while, 174 and see them [for what they are]; and in time they [too] will come to see [what they do not see now]. 175 What, do they seek to hasten Our chastisement? 176 But then, once it alights upon them, hapless will be the awakening of those who were warned [to no avail]! 177 And turn away from them till a time 178 And wait, for they will soon see. 179 Glory be to your Lord: the Lord of Glory is far above what they attribute to Him. 180 and peace be upon the Messengers, 181 And all the praise and thanks be to Allah, Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 182
