The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 And your garments purify! 4 and flee from the statues! 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 Finally, when the Trumpet is sounded, 8 Truly, that Day will be a Hard Day. 9 Not easy upon the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 and appointed for him ample wealth 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made things easy for them. 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I will cover him with arduous torment. 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Let him be destroyed. How he calculated! 20 and then he looks [around for new arguments,] 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 And said: This is naught else than magic from of old; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 Naught doth it permit to endure, and naught doth it leave alone!- 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (guards). 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
