The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
By oath of the beloved shining star Mohammed, peace and blessings be upon him, when he returned from the Ascent. 1 Your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, 2 Nor does he say (aught) of (his own) Desire. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 And was at a distance of two bow lengths or nearer. 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Will ye therefore dispute with him concerning that which he hath seen? 12 Indeed, he saw him another time 13 by the Lote-Tree of the Boundary 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 his eyes did not swerve, nor did they stray 17 For truly did he see, of the Signs of his Lord, the Greatest! 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 and Manat the third, the other? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 This is certainly an unjust apportioning. 22 These are nothing but names that you and your forefathers have invented, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They are merely following their conjectures and their carnal desires although guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Does man imagine that it is his due to have all that he might wish for, 24 But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. 25
