The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city, Makkah - 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 and [I call to witness] parent and offspring: 3 Verily We have created man into toil and hardship. 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not give him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?- 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or to the indigent (down) in the dust. 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 The Fire will be shut over them (i.e. they will be enveloped by the Fire without any opening or window or outlet. 20
