The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in brightness, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 observe piety, and believe in receiving rewards from God. 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 And what will his wealth benefit him when he goes down (in destruction). 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 I have warned you then about a raging Fire: 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 He desires only to please his Lord, the Supreme. 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
