The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the declining star, 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 nor speaks he out of caprice. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 The Strong; then the Spectacle inclined towards him. 6 And reached the highest pinnacle. 7 then he drew near, and became close 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 And He revealed unto His slave that which He revealed. 10 The heart [of the Prophet] did not misconstrue what he saw. 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass: 14 by the Garden of [Eternal] Repose, 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 (Muhammad's) eyes did not deceive him, nor did they lead him to falsehood. 17 Certainly he saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 (Can anything as such be considered true) of al-Lat, al-Uzza, 19 And Manat, the third, the other? 20 Is it for you the males and for Him the females? 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 These are only names which you and your fathers have invented. No authority was sent down by God for them. They only follow conjecture and wish-fulfilment, even though guidance had come to them already from their Lord. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 But unto Allah belongeth the after (life), and the former. 25
