Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And by ten nights, 2 The multiple and the one, 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 and with Pharaoh of the [many] tent-poles? 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 And increased therein the corruption. 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 Truly your Lord is ever watchful. 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 No! But you do not honor the orphan 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you eat away the heritage, devouring (everything) indiscriminately, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 and your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say, "Oh, would that I had provided beforehand for my life!" 24 Upon that day none shall chastise as He chastises, 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return towards your Lord – you being pleased with Him, and He pleased with you! 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter My Paradise." 30
