The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 On that Day (of Judgment), long as fifty thousand years, the angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him. 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 and no friend will ask about his friend, 10 though they may be in one another's sight: [for,] everyone who was lost in sin will on that Day but desire to ransom himself from suffering at the price of his own children, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 But no! There is a raging blaze 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 Who amasses and then hoards. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 except those that pray, 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe the Day of Judgement to be true. 26 and who stand in dread of their Sustainer's chastisement 27 surely the chastisement of their Lord is a thing none can feel secure from – 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their spouses and those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock], for which they incur no blame -- 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 They will live in gardens with honour. 35
