And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds." 46 When he showed them Our miracles, they started to laugh at them. 47 We showed them Sign after Sign, each greater than its fellow, and We seized them with Punishment, in order that they might turn (to Us). 48 And they said [to Musa (Moses)]: "O you sorcerer! Invoke your Lord for us according to what He has covenanted with you. Verily, We shall guide ourselves (aright)." 49 So when We averted the calamity from them, they immediately broke the promise! 50 Then Pharaoh made a proclamation to his people: 'My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine and these rivers which flow beneath me? What, can you not see? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Then why have there not been placed upon him bracelets of gold or come with him the angels in conjunction?" 53 Thus he made light (of the matter) to his people, and they obeyed him. They were certainly wicked. 54 We took revenge on them by drowning them all together. 55 We made them a precedent, an example for later peoples. 56
