The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 and I swear by the parent and his offspring: 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Thinketh he, that none hath power over him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep. 11 And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? 12 It is freeing the neck, 13 or, in a day of famine, the feeding of 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 And to be of those who believe and exhort one another to perseverance and exhort one another to pity. 17 Those are the Companions of the Right. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
