The tribe of Ad rejected the Messengers. 123 When their brother Hood said to them: 'Will you not be cautious? 124 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust: 125 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 126 And I ask of you no hire therefor: my hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 127 Build ye on every eminence a landmark in vanity? 128 And seek ye out strongholds, that haply ye may last for ever? 129 And will you [always,] whenever you lay hand [on others,] lay hand [on them] cruelly, without any restraint? 130 So fear God, and obey me; 131 Keep your duty toward Him Who hath aided you with (the good things) that ye know, 132 "Freely has He bestowed on you cattle and sons,- 133 And gardens and fountains; 134 Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an awful day. 135 They replied: 'It is the same to us whether you admonish or whether you are not one of the admonishers. 136 This is just a habit of antiquated people. 137 We are not going to be damned." 138 So they gave him the lie, then We destroyed them. Most surely there is a sign in this, but most of them do not believe. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
