The tribe of Thamud also rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 and that you will [always be able to] hew dwellings out of the mountains with [the same] great skill?" 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Verily Your Lord is Immensely Mighty, Most Compassionate. 159
