The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 by which the angels and the Spirit ascend to Him in one Day the duration of which is fifty thousand years. 4 (Muhammad), exercise patience with no complaints. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it very near. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 his companion (wife), his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!- 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 Not so, however, those who consciously turn towards God in prayer. 22 Who persevere in devotion, 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the beggar and the outcast, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 (Those) who keep their trusts and their covenant, 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who are attentive at their worship. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
