۞ Before this We gave Abraham his virtue, for We knew him. 51 When he asked his father and his people, "What are these images to which you are so devoted?" 52 They replied: 'We found our fathers worshipping them' 53 He said, "You were certainly, you and your fathers, in manifest error." 54 They said: Bringest thou unto us the truth, or art thou some jester? 55 He said: Nay! your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who brought them into existence, and I am of those who bear witness to this: 56 And [he added to himself.] "By God, I shall most certainly bring about the downfall of your idols as soon as you have turned your backs and gone away!" 57 He broke them all into pieces, except for the biggest one of them, so that they might return to it [for enquiry]. 58 They said, "Who has done this to our gods? He must indeed be some man of impiety!" 59 They said: "We heard a young man talking (against) them who is called Ibrahim (Abraham)." 60 They said: 'Then bring him here so that the people may see, so that they may bear witness' 61 They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?" 62 'No' he replied. 'It was their great one amongst them that did it. Ask them, if they are able to speak' 63 So they turned to themselves and said, "Surely ye are the ones in the wrong!" 64 With their heads cast down they said, "Abraham, you know that idols do not speak. How then can you ask such a question?" 65 He said: What! do you then serve besides Allah what brings you not any benefit at all, nor does it harm you? 66 Uff to you and to what you worship instead of Allah. Then will you not use reason?" 67 They said, "Burn him and protect your gods, If ye do (anything at all)!" 68 'O Fire' We said, 'be coolness and safety for Abraham' 69 And they intended for him harm, but We made them the greatest losers. 70 And We delivered him and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds. 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac, and Jacob as a grandson. Each of them We made righteous. 72 And We made them leaders, guiding by Our command; and We revealed unto them the doing of good deeds and the establishment of prayer, and the giving of poor-rate; and of Us they were the worshippers. 73 AND UNTO Lot, too, We vouchsafed sound judgment and knowledge [of right and wrong,] and saved him from that community which was given to deeds of abomination. [We destroyed those people - for,] verily, they were people lost in evil, depraved 74 And We admitted him into Our mercy. Indeed, he was of the righteous. 75
