a large group of the earlier people 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In fierce hot wind and boiling water, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 "And also our forefathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And shall fill therewith your bellies. 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have incorporated death in your constitution, and We shall not be hindered 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Did you produce the tree that serves as fuel or do We? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
