Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha-Meem. (Alphabets of the Arabic language – Allah, and to whomever He reveals, know their precise meanings.) 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 as a Mercy from your Lord. Surely He is All-Hearing, All-Seeing, 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no god but He; He gives life and makes to die; your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay! They play in doubt. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the torment, verily we shall become believers. 12 How shall the message be (effectual) for them, seeing that an Messenger explaining things clearly has (already) come to them,- 13 Yet they turn away from him and say: "Tutored (by others), a man possessed!" 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ And assuredly afore them We proved Fir'awn's people, and there came unto them an apostle honoured. 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 He therefore prayed to his Lord, “These are a guilty nation!” 22 (He was told): “Set out with My servants by night for you will certainly be pursued. 23 Leave the sea behind you parted; they are a host destined to be drowned." 24 How many of the gardens and fountains have they left! 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
