A multitude from the ancients. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and persisted in heinous sins. 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 And will fill your bellies therewith; 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 "We are ruined, 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
