The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Recite in the name of your Lord Who created, 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 who taught by the Pen, 4 taught the human what he did not know. 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 that he sees himself sufficed. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 A servant when he prays? 10 Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah) 11 and enjoins piety? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Did he not realise that Allah is watching? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom, 17 We will call on the angels of punishment (to deal with him)! 18 Nay, pay thou no heed to him, but prostrate thyself [before God] and draw close [unto Him]! ۩ 19
