A multitude of those of old 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 The Companions of the Left Hand,- what will be the Companions of the Left Hand? 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you ever considered the seed which you cast upon the soil? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry powder, and ye would be left in wonderment, 65 (Saying:) 'We are laden with debts! 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
