The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: Will ye not ward off (evil)? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no hire therefor; MY hire is but with the Lord of the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 "In gardens and springs. 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 Who cause corruption in the land and do not amend." 152 They said, “You are under a magic spell.” 153 "You are but a human being like us. Then bring us a sign if you are of the truthful." 154 Replied he: "This she-camel shall have a share of water, and you shall have a share of water, on the days appointed [therefor]; 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 and the punishment seized them. Surely, in that there is a sign. Yet most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
