Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Ha, Meem. 1 The perspicuous Book is witness 2 (That) We sent it down one night of blessing -- so that We could warn -- 3 On that [night] was made clear, in wisdom, the distinction between all things [good and evil] 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Aye! they're in doubt sporting. 9 So watch for the day when the sky begins to emit clear smoke, 10 That will envelop the people. This will be a painful torment. 11 'O our Lord, remove Thou from us the chastisement; we are believers.' 12 [But] how shall this remembrance avail them [at the Last Hour,] seeing that an apostle had previously come unto them, clearly expounding the truth, 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 Saying: Give up to me the slaves of Allah. Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you. 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 And if you do not believe me, [at least] stand away from me!" 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 And cornfields and goodly positions. 26 And favours amongst which they were rejoicing! 27 That is what We did; and We made another nation their heirs. 28 and neither sky nor earth shed tears over them, nor were they allowed a respite. 29
