The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 Proclaim the glory of your Lord; 3 And your clothing purify 4 and shun uncleanness, 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet is sounded, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 and it will not be easy for the unbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Yea, Woe to him; How he plotted!- 20 Then he looked, 21 then he frowned, and scowled, 22 Then turned he away in pride 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 These are only words from a mere mortal". 25 I will cast him into the fire of Hell. 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
