The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 Verily, (the ends) ye strive for are diverse. 4 As for him who gives (in charity) and keeps his duty to Allah and fears Him, 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We shall surely ease for him the Path of Hardship (the Fire). 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 and to Us belong the Last and the First. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 He who denieth and turneth away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
