O thou folded in garments! 1 Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,- 2 of one-half thereof - or make it a little less than that, 3 Or increase thereto. And intone the Qur'an with measured intonations. 4 We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). 5 Surely the rising by night is the firmest way to tread and the best corrective of speech. 6 Indeed during the day you have a long schedule of occupations. 7 And remember the Name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with a complete devotion. 8 Lord of the East and the West; there is no god but He; so take Him for a Guardian. 9 And bear patiently what they say and avoid them with a becoming avoidance. 10 Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. 11 Verily We shall have fetters with Us, and a roaring furnace, 12 And a food that chokes, and a painful torment. 13 On that day, the earth and the mountains will be violently shaken, and the mountains will be turned into heaps of moving sand. 14 We have sent to you, (O men!) a messenger, to be a witness concerning you, even as We sent a messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Firon disobeyed the apostle, so We laid on him a violent hold. 16 Then how can you fear, if you disbelieve, a Day that will make the children white- haired? 17 The Day when the heavens will be rent asunder and God's promise shall be fulfilled. 18 This is indeed an advice; so whoever wishes may take the path towards his Lord. 19
