The Hijjr Valley (Al-Hijjr)
99 verses, revealed in Mecca after Joseph (Yousuf) before Animals (Al-An 'aam)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ Alif-Lam-Ra. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran, and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. These are the Verses of the Book, and a plain Quran. 1 It could be that those who disbelieve will wish that they were Muslims. 2 Let them eat and enjoy; and let their hopes deceive them, soon they shall know. 3 And We did not destroy any city but that for it was a known decree. 4 No nation can anticipate its term, nor delay it. 5 And they say: O you to whom the Reminder has been revealed! you are most surely insane: 6 Why do you not bring down the angels if what you say is true". 7 But then We never send the angels down save with the purpose (of enforcing their doom), after which they will not be given more respite. 8 We Ourselves have revealed the Quran and We are its Protectors. 9 We verily sent (messengers) before thee among the factions of the men of old. 10 And whenever a Messenger came to them, they never failed to mock him. 11 thus We cause this [habit of mocking] to enter into the hearts of the sinful. 12 They believe not therein, though the example of the men of old hath gone before. 13 And if We opened upon them a door of the heaven, and they passed the day mounting thereto. 14 they would still say, "Our eyes have been dazzled. We are bewitched." 15

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
