The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 arise and warn, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 Do not bestow favours in expectation of return, 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 That shall be - that Day - a day hard. 9 Not of ease, for disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 and sons that stand in witness. 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give him even more! 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 He planned and plotted. 18 Perish he! How maliciously he devised! 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 He looked (at others); 21 then frowned and scowled; 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 Nothing more than the speech of a man!" 25 Soon I will cast him into hell. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
