Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 Therefor keep your duty to Allah and obey me, 150 and do not follow the biddings of those that go to excesses 151 Who make mischief in the land and do not act aright. 152 Said they: "Thou art but one of the bewitched! 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
