(The tribe of) A'ad denied the messengers (of Allah). 123 When their brother Hud said to them: "Will you not take heed? 124 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust: 125 "So fear Allah and obey me. 126 I ask no recompense of you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 127 Do you construct on every elevation a sign, amusing yourselves, 128 "And do ye get for yourselves fine buildings in the hope of living therein (for ever)? 129 When you assault, you assault like tyrants. 130 So be fearful of God and follow me. 131 And be careful of (your duty to) Him Who has given you abundance of what you know. 132 Hath aided you with cattle and sons. 133 "And gardens and springs. 134 Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day." 135 They said: it is equal unto us whether thou admonishest or art not of the admonishers. 136 This [religion of ours] is none other than that to which our forebears clung, 137 and we shall not be punished." 138 Eventually they gave the lie to him and We destroyed them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 139 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 140
