We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his Council, and he said: 'I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds' 46 When he showed them Our miracles, they started to laugh at them. 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 (Whenever they faced an affliction) they would say: “O magician, pray for us to your Lord according to your station with Him. We shall certainly be guided to the Right Way.” 49 But when We removed the Penalty from them, behold, they broke their word. 50 The Pharaoh shouted to his people, "My people, is the kingdom of Egypt not mine? and can you not see that the streams flow from beneath my palace? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 and why have not armlets of gold been bestowed on him and why is there not a train of angels accompanying him?" 53 He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them a precedent and an example for the later peoples. 56
