Those who believe ask why no chapter [about fighting] has been sent down. Yet when a decisive chapter that mentions fighting is sent down, you can see the sick of heart looking at you [Prophet] as if they were under the shadow of death. Therefore, woe to them! 20 Since they have (pledged) Us obedience and to speak reasonably, it would be more proper for them, when it is decided (that everyone must take part in the battle), to remain true (in their pledge to God). 21 So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship? 22 God has condemned these people and made them deaf, dumb, and blind. 23 Will they not, then, ponder over this Qur'an? - or are there locks upon their hearts? 24 Lo! those who turn back after the guidance hath been manifested unto them, Satan hath seduced them, and He giveth them the rein. 25 because they say to those who abhor what God has revealed, "We will obey you in some matters." God knows their secrets. 26 But how will it be when the angels cause them to die smiting their backs. 27 That is because they follow what is displeasing to Allah and are averse to His pleasure, therefore He has made null their deeds. 28
