A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 you shall eat (the fruit) of the Tree of Zakkum. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 "We are ruined, 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
