In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Stand (to prayer) by night, but not all night,- 2 A half of it or a little less 3 Or a little more; and recite the Qur'an in slow, measured rhythmic tones. 4 We shall soon entrust to you a message heavy (with solemnity). 5 surely the first part of the night is heavier in tread, more upright in speech, 6 You are indeed much occupied during the day with the affairs of the world. 7 And remember the name of your Lord and, leaving others, devote yourself solely to Him. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 And bear patiently the vain things they utter, and gracefully forsake them. 10 And let Me alone with the beliers, owners of ease: and respite thou them a little. 11 Verily We shall have fetters with Us, and a roaring furnace, 12 And food that chokes, and a painful punishment. 13 On the Day when the earth and the mountains will be in violent shake, and the mountains will be a heap of sand poured out and flowing down. 14 Surely We have sent unto you a Messenger as a witness over you, even as We sent to Pharaoh a Messenger, 15 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. 16 Then how shall ye, if ye deny (Allah), guard yourselves against a Day that will make children hoary-headed?- 17 The heaven will break apart therefrom; ever is His promise fulfilled. 18 This, surely, is an admonition. So let him who will, take the right path to his Lord. 19
