The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
By the sun and its morning brightness, 1 and by the moon as it follows it, 2 and by the day as it reveals its glory 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 By the heaven and Who built it, 5 And the earth and Him Who extended it, 6 and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it, 7 And given the faculty of knowing what is disruptive and what is intrinsic to it. 8 He has succeeded who purifies it, 9 And he will indeed fail who corrupts it. 10 The Thamud (people) rejected (their prophet) through their inordinate wrong-doing, 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 the Messenger of Allah said to them: '(This is) the shecamel of Allah, let her drink' 13 In response they belied him, and hamstrung the she camel – so Allah put ruin over them because of their sins and flattened their dwellings. 14 for none [of them] had any fear of what might befall them. 15
