The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the Night as it conceals (the light); 1 And by the day as it appears in brightness; 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 As for one who gives [to others] and fears [God], 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 And as for him who is niggardly and considers himself free from need (of Allah), 8 and he belied the finest 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Indeed guiding is upon Us. 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 where none shall burn except the most wicked, 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 He who spends his wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 but only out of a longing for the countenance of his Sustainer, the All-Highest: 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
