The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 And the day resplendent 2 and by Him Who created the male and the female: 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 So he who gives (in charity) and fears (Allah), 5 And believes in the best [reward], 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But for those who are niggardly, horde their wealth, 8 And rejects goodness, 9 We will make smooth for him the path for evil; 10 Nor will his wealth profit him when he falls headlong (into the Pit). 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 No one will burn in it but the most wretched, 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 and confers no favour on any man for recompense, 19 acting only for the sake of his Lord the Most High -- 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
