The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
(Muhammad), read in the name of your Lord who created (all things). 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Read: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 Who taught by the pen - 4 Taught man that which he knew not. 5 Yes indeed, man is surely rebellious. 6 Because he sees himself self-sufficient. 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the return. 8 What thinkest thou? He who forbids 9 A bondman of Ours when he prayeth 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 Or enjoineth piety? 12 What will happen if the prohibiting rejects the Truth and turns away from it!? 13 does he not know that Allah sees? 14 No indeed; if he does not desist, We shall drag him by the forelock; 15 A lying, sinful forelock! 16 So let him call his associates, 17 [the while] We shall summon the forces of heavenly chastisement! 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.
