We created mankind from clay, molded from mud, 26 and the jinn created We before of fire flaming. 27 Recall when your Lord said to the angels: "I will indeed bring into being a human being out of dry ringing clay wrought from black mud. 28 And when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My spirit, bow before him in homage;" 29 Thereupon the angels prostrated themselves, all of them together, 30 except Iblis who refused to join with the others in prostration. 31 Allah said: O Iblis! what aileth thou that thou art not with the prostrates? 32 [Iblis] replied: "It is not for me to prostrate myself before mortal man whom Thou hast created out of sounding clay, out of dark slime transmuted!" 33 (Allah) said: 'Begone, you are accursed! 34 and will be subjected to condemnation until the Day of Judgment." 35 [Iblis (Satan)] said: "O my Lord! Give me then respite till the Day they (the dead) will be resurrected." 36 Allah said: verily then thou art of the respited: 37 Until the Day of the time well-known." 38 He said: My Lord! Because Thou hast sent me astray, I verily shall adorn the path of error for them in the earth, and shall mislead them every one, 39 Save such of them as are Thy perfectly devoted slaves. 40 [Allah] said, "This is a path [of return] to Me [that is] straight. 41 over My servants thou shalt have no authority, except those that follow thee, 42 Hell is the promised place for them all. 43 Which has several gates, and each gate is marked for every section of them." 44
