But as for anyone who chooses to remain blind to the remembrance of the Most Gracious, to him We assign an [enduring] evil impulse, to become his other self: 36 Such (evil ones) really hinder them from the Path, but they think that they are being guided aright! 37 To the extent that when the disbeliever will be brought to Us, he will say to his devil, “Alas – if only there was the distance* of east and west, between you and me!” – so what an evil companion** he is! (* Had I not listened to you. **They will be bound together in chains.) 38 It will profit you not this Day (O you who turn away from Allah's remembrance and His worship, etc.) as you did wrong, (and) that you will be sharers (you and your Qarin) in the punishment. 39 What! can you then make the deaf to hear or guide the blind and him who is in clear error? 40 So if We take you away, We shall then indeed take revenge from them. 41 Rather We will certainly show you that which We have promised them; for surely We are the possessors of full power over them. 42 Therefore, hold fast to that which is revealed to you, indeed, you are on the Straight Path. 43 And it is undoubtedly an honour for you and your people; and you will soon be questioned. 44 Ask Our Messengers whom We sent before you if We have ever made gods, other than the Merciful, to be worshipped. 45
