The Stars (Al-Najm)
62 verses, revealed in Mecca after Absoluteness (Al-Ikhlaas) before He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the setting star, 1 That your companion is not confused, nor has he gone astray, 2 Nor does he speak of (his own) desire. 3 This is only revelation communicated, 4 and taught to him 5 [an angel] endowed with surpassing power, who in time manifested himself in his true shape and nature, 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not lie [about] what it saw. 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 Near it is the Garden of Refuge - 15 when there covered the Lote-Tree that which covered; 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 He certainly saw the greatest (signs) of the existence of his Lord. 18 So did you observe the idols Lat and Uzza? 19 And subsequently the third, the Manat? 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 that, lo and behold, is an unfair division! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have what he wishes? 24 Nay! for Allah is the hereafter and the former (life). 25
