The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
ONE who is minded to ask might ask about the suffering which [in the hereafter] is bound to befall 1 Upon the disbelievers the punishment that none can avert. 2 From Allah, the Lord of the ways of Ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 but, We see it as near! 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the hills will be light as wool. 9 And no friend will ask after a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and all persons of the earth, if only he could thus save himself. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ VERILY, man is born with a restless disposition. 19 When evil toucheth him, he is bewailing. 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 But not so the worshippers 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who are upright in their testimonies; 33 And those who protect their prayers. 34 Those shall dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
