The Town (Al-Balad)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 And you shall be made free from obligation in this city-- 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think that no one can overpower him? 5 And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth: 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not grant him two eyes, 8 and a tongue and two lips? 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what could make thee conceive what it is, that steep uphill road? 12 (It is) the setting free of a slave, 13 Or to feed in times of famine 14 an orphaned relative 15 or a needy man in misery; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
